Terra sigillata is a general term for the fine red pottery of ancient Rome. Usually roughly translated as ‘sealed earth’. The meaning of terra sigillata is actually ‘clay bearing little images’ (Latin sigilla). Terra sigillata, as a material, is a very fine slip, characterised by its wonderfully satiny feel and appearance, and has in recent times been embraced as a contemporary studio pottery technique. In this master class we will explore the simple technology of terra sigillata to produce our own. We will also explore forms (both by hand forming and on the wheel) and decorating techniques that are best suited to this sensuous material/technique.
